Well, we finally get an answer to that question, as his battle with Monkey Boy is interspersed with flashbacks to his past that reveal exactly where the Runaway Kotaro got his name. Behind his haughty exterior hides a sweet and fluffy core that never ceases to leave a smile on my face. Katsura Kotaro has always been on of my favorite characters on this show. It’s no wonder this new era of Gintama has so utterly destroyed me time and time again when every single character is coming to the climax of their emotional catharsis at the same time, what else could I do but break from the sheer awesomeness of it all.

By pulling from its vast and deep history, the show is able to weave countless individual stories together for epic standoffs like the Shogun Assassination and Farewell Shinsengumi arcs, both of which juggled a million different themes and subplots without missing a beat.

Whereas Gintama’s previous massive arcs were mostly dedicated to a single overarching theme or symbol (the sun in Yoshiwara in Flames, gender in Yagyu Clan), the explosive ripple effects of this new world are resulting in arcs that are about everything, throwing tons of disparate characters and their individual struggles together and tying them all into a single sprawling narrative.

Seriously, while it’s gonna take to the end of the arc to determine where it ranks among my favorites, this massive battle is already proving itself to be not just epic and badass in the most classic shonen way Gintama’s ever attempted (Seriously, a structured series of individual fights against a bunch of mini-bosses? We’re one step away from this become a full-on tournament arc.), but perhaps the most intensely character focused smackdown yet. Well, I think it’s official: Battle at Rakuyo is, if nowhere near my favorite arc just yet, probably some of the best storytelling that’s ever come out of Gintama.
